If we implemented this and it was only able to search metadata from that point in time onwards, would that be useful or would it be confusing to communicate in the UI?

An error occurred while saving the comment Josh Long commentedI agree this can be extremely helpful.
When in a Comparison and on one of the groups (New Items) along with the many other filters available a possible "unselected" or "unchecked" option would be very useful.
Basically a way to ensure an item isn't missed because it was hard to see.New Items > Metadata Type(filtered to "Custom Field") > Name(filtered to "abc") > Checkbox(unchecked) = removes the 200 items I may have already checked from my results leaving a much smaller list of items to review and verify if we need to select or not.

EDIT:
Gearset now lets you select specific fields in layouts for a deployment.
Here's a quick article on getting started with precision deployments for layouts:
https://docs.gearset.com/en/articles/6407322-getting-started-with-precision-layout-deployments
We are working on adding support for more metadata types such as record types, value sets, Lightning pages and other XML types.

Yes! Similar to a search within an IDE tool like VSCode Searching for email addresses hard coded into Formula fields or Apex Classes etc. Or recently URLs that have been hardcoded. While using VSCode or other IDEs works having this within Gearset would be incredibly powerful! Even if for nothing else than to see the results not even for a Comparison of orgs.
